What is scoliosis?

What is scoliosis?

A spinal deformity is an abnormal alignment or curve of the bony vertebral column. Adult scoliosis can be caused by age-related birth defects, a child’s growth, aging, injury, or previous spine surgery.

The most common type of spinal deformity in adults is degenerative scoliosis.

The moderate deformity occurs when the facet joints and discs deteriorate over time and are no longer able to support the spine’s normal posture. Pain results from stressed joints and pinched nerves, not the abnormal curve. Treatment can include medications, osteopathy, physiotherapy, injections, or surgery.

The treatment courses we offer here at the York Rehab Clinic have a very high success rate. This is largely thanks to the fact that we are able to offer our own unique method of therapy, developed specifically by ourselves to provide patients with full treatment for all aspects of their condition.

The main purpose of osteopathy in scoliosis treatment is to help keep the facet joints mobile and, in turn, to provide relief from the pain experienced by scoliosis sufferers. This is achieved by applying the holistic approach used in osteopathic therapies, which aims to release restrictions in the spine and surrounding tissues while improving the patient’s posture and proprioception.

Facet Joint Syndrome / Arthritis

The facet joints are the connections between the bones of the spine. The nerve roots pass through these joints to go from the spinal cord to the arms, legs, and other parts of the body.
